Economic Impact of Tourism - Swale (2021 results)

The Covid-19 pandemic continued to cause significant global disruption to the visitor economy sector in 2021 and this is reflected in the results of the latest study into the Economic Impact of Tourism in Swale.  There were however signs of recovery with a 70% improvement in the total economic value of tourism to the Borough since 2020.

The total value of tourism, including all visitor spend, as well as associated and indirect spending was £173 million, including a total of £146 million spent directly by tourists during their visit (an average of £9 million each month); £39 million from overnight visits and £107 million from day trips.

In addition, visiting for a holiday accounted for 54% during 2021 in Swale. This figure rose proportionally by 10% (up from 44% in 2020).

There were 4.6 million day trips undertaken in the area, with 4.3 million day trips and 0.3 million overnight trips (258,200 overnight trips in the area).

The sector supported 3,884 jobs in the borough, with 3,452 direct tourism jobs and 432 non-tourism related jobs supported by the visitor economy.
